Kurt
Larsen
Kurt Larsen, born and raised in California, studied art at UCLA, earning his MFA in 1993. Influenced by Don Suggs and following in the footsteps of his former mentor, Peter Alexander, Kurt went on to show at the Hammer Museum in 1995.
Edge No Edge is a new collection of works marking Larsen’s return to the LA art scene. It offers a glimpse into the perceptual experiences that emerge as light and spatial effects bend around the tonal choices of hard-edge and no-edge transitions.
The work focuses on the difference between seeing and believing. “These paintings are optical tripwires that make me aware of my brain scanning and rescanning what I’m looking at, which makes me question what triggers my emotional response to reality,” Larsen explains. “This process, which yields visual stimulation, opens a door to connect vision and emotion.”
